Dry eyes got you down? Are you unable to receive the long lasting relief from over the counter or prescription medications? It is probably because those medications don’t target the primary cause of your condition which is the blockage of your Meibomian glands located in your eyelids.

Here at the Dry Eye Center of Central New Jersey we offer the leading Lipiflow treatment for evaporative dry eyes. The Lipiflow system is designed for the application of confined heat and pressure therapy for adult patients with evaporative dry eye. By doing so it opens the blocked glands that allow your body to resume its natural production of tear film oil. There is no other dry eye therapies that can do what the Lipiflow Thermal Pulsation System can. The Lipiflow system is clinically proven with documented results. In a clinical study about 79% of patients had tremendous improvement in their overall dry eye symptoms after a single treatment. You may need to have this treatment done periodically as your symptoms will return over time.

Our new system consists of:

  • LipiView® Ocular Surface Interferometer – Captures detailed images of the tear film
  • Meibomian Gland Evaluator – Evaluates Meibomian gland function
  • LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System – Treats evaporative dry eye

Evaporative Dry Eye Caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): An estimated 86% of the 100 million dry eye sufferers worldwide have evaporative dry eye1, which stems from a deficiency in the oily lipid layer of the tear film.  The lipids serve to protect the aqueous layer of tears and keep it from evaporating too quickly. The lipid deficiency is commonly due to blockages in the Meibomian glands caused by MGD.

LipiFlow Treats the Cause of Evaporative Dry Eye

LipiFlow is intended for the application of localized heat and pressure in adult patients with chronic cystic conditions of the eyelids, including Miebomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), also known as evaporative dry eye or lipid deficient dry eye.

Unlike traditional dry eye treatments (warm compresses, wetting drops, ointments) that address symptoms, LipiFlow treats the root cause, the obstructed Meibomian glands. The goal of unblocking the glands is to allow them to resume their natural production of lipids required for a healthy tear film.

How LipiFlow Works:

  • LipiFlow is a 12-minute in-office procedure. Both eyes can be treated simultaneously.
  • LipiFlow uses a disposable eye piece to apply controlled heat to the inner eyelids and intermittent gentle pressure to the outer eyelid.
  • LipiFlow facilitates the release of lipids from the blocked Meibomian glands allowing the natural flow of lipids to resume.

What to Expect from LipiFlow

In a randomized, multi-center, controlled clinical trial, 79% of patients treated with LipiFlow reported an improvement in overall dry eye symptoms. LipiFlow® is not recommended for patients with a history of ocular surgery, ocular injury or ocular herpes of the eye or eyelid within prior 3 months; active ocular infection, active ocular inflammation or history of chronic, recurrent ocular inflammation within prior 3 months; eyelid abnormalities that affect lid function; or an ocular surface abnormality that may compromise corneal integrity. LipiFlow may not fit all eyes.
